Tom Stoppard delights and confuses his audiences with his quick wit and sharp allusions.
Inspired by the incongruous images of Rene Magritte, Stoppard’s “After Magritte,” features a couple and an inspector who find themselves oddly intertwined over a strange encounter and a peculiar domestic scene.
In “The Real Inspector Hound,” two theatre critics find themselves, quite literally, drawn into the action of the play they are critiquing.
Here’s what our critics say:
“[Director Zachary] Davis makes ingenious use of Piccolo’s unique space in the remodeled Main Street Metra station in Evanston, taking advantage of, rather than ignoring, some of the quirks of a non-traditional theater space (like windows). The cast is generally excellent… Ken Raabe as Hound’s blustery critic, Birdboot, is a standout.” – Time Out Chicago
“Highly recommended” – Chicago Reader
“If you can’t see much humor in paradoxes about art and reality, check out the Tom Stoppard doubleheader at Piccolo Theatre.” – Bruce Ingram, Evanston Review
“Consider these two one-act Stoppard plays as bite-sized morsels of sassy theater. Satire, mystery, and social commentary prove a nice recipe for a satiating stage presentation.” – Fauzia Arain, Chicago Tribune
