About the Director

Geoffrey Buckley was an associate of the Piccolo Theatre, a mime artist, director, and choreographer. He was trained as an actor and dancer (Laban) in London and America (Tai Chi) and studied at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq Theatre in Paris. He has also received training in the old school of the Italian Commedia dell‘Arte scenarios with Eduardo De Filippo of the Teatro San Ferdinando in Italy. His unique gift of Pantomime Blanc places him in the ranks of the world’s most famous pantomimists, and he has been called “the Pierrot of this decade” (Kay Dick, author of Pierrot).

Mr. Buckley was a recognized master of many forms of theatrical expression, such as Pantomime Blanc-The Language of Gesture, Classical and Modern Pantomime, Figuration Mime, Commedia dell’Arte, Circus Clown, Acrobatic Mime, The Fools of Shakespeare and Moliere, and Mimeographic Dance.

In 2002, Mr. Buckley directed Piccolo’s Mr. Punch or Jack and the Blasé
Bride
. He was the movement director for the British hit Jungle Book, which played at the Bristol Old Vic. He worked at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, and then went on to the London West End for the New Shakespeare Company. In 2003 he was movement director for Piccolo’s Jack and the Wild Goose Chase. He has also toured extensively in both Europe and America, presenting his program The Divine Fool – Pierrot. Other productions include Les Fourberies de Scapin, Pinocchio, The Servant of Two Masters, Cyrano de Bergerac, Hamlet, King Lear, The Tempest, The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Mr. Buckley worked in other media as well, with television credits including The Lonely Vision (Beatles), BBC’s Pinocchio (Clown), and Commedia dell’Arte (NBC Chicago); and film The Actor (Clown). He passed away peacefully at home on Thursday 16th January 2020, aged 87 years.
