Piccolo Theatre
Piccolo Theatre, a unique professional ensemble-based theatre company, was dedicated to the presentation of contemporary and classic comedies. Their repertoire included works by renowned authors such as Molière, Goldoni, Tom Stoppard, and Dario Fo. What set them apart was their innovative approach of infusing these works with the energy of physical theatre, thereby connecting the text to the vibrant essence of live theatre. In addition, Piccolo Theatre was committed to preserving traditional popular theatre forms and techniques, such as Commedia dell’ Arte, vaudeville, British Panto, music hall, and the circus, through research, education, and presentation.
Piccolo Theatre School, a training center for professional actors, offered a diverse range of courses that catered to various aspects of theatre. These included mask theatre, dance, deep tissue massage bodywork, courses in Commedia dell’ Arte, stage movement, an actor’s boot camp with a focus on endurance, and T’ai Chi Chuan. The school also expanded its offerings to include children’s and adult classes in physical theatre training, masks, puppetry, and mime, providing a comprehensive and inspiring training experience.
With a team of 20 dedicated members, Piccolo Theatre made a significant impact not only locally but also on the international stage. Their seasonal performances in the Theatre were complemented by outdoor commedia dell’ Arte sketches and Variety Shows, which they performed annually during the Custer Fair for area colleges and universities, and at the resort in Charlevoix, Michigan. Their influence was further solidified in 2003 when they were invited to participate in Playing French, the first-ever International Contemporary French Theater Festival in Chicago. This international recognition was a testament to their unique approach and dedication. The Italian consulate of Chicago also pledged its support for future Italian-based productions, further cementing their global influence.
A short time after artistic director John Szostek retired, Piccolo Theatre ceased operations. Some years later, the nonprofit Piccolo Theatre, Inc. stopped producing the Custer Fair and ceased all operations.
